You should not be talking about smartphones in 2019 without talking about the Huawei P30 Pro. Alongside foldable phones, it is the rave of the moment thanks to its great capabilities for photography and long lasting battery life.
Today, when manufacturers announce the coming of a new flagship, their users are already expecting a very fast device using the fastest processor at the time, they expect great display quality and a speaker that sounds great and loud.
Not that they don’t think much more can be done in those aspect but for couple of years now, the focus has been on how narrow the bezels (sides, top and bottom) can be and how great, photography can be on a smartphone.
Fortunately, Huawei been one of the largest manufacturers in the world, leading company in 5G development and among the top picks when it comes to the most innovative companies in the world announced the P30 Pro in March with most of the expectations users already have in mind and exceed excellently above expectations when it comes to photography which most people wants to really see improved on smartphones.
Photography as regard to smartphones has really seen huge improvement over the past couple of years than it has ever seen before. The good thing is that when talking about the best camera phones in the world today, the P30 Pro from Huawei will be among the top 3.
Without further ado, let’s get to the business of the day which is the review of one of the best smartphones in the world right now.
Huawei P30 Pro Design
This device is one of the best designed smartphones right now though the camera bump makes it sit uncomfortably on a flat rigid surface such as a table but that doesn’t spoil anything as it won’t be the first flagship with that.
Design wise, it is a better designed phone than the P20 Pro and more feature rich than the Mate 20 Pro but you can easily spot the similarities between it and the aforementioned duo.
There is nothing at the top (except maybe the antenna bands that runs across the top and the bottom) meaning no headphone jack. Also nothing on the left hand side of the device but at the bottom resides the speaker (which sound loud but the quality is not that great), usb type-c port, microphone and sim + external card (nano memory card) tray.
It has IP68 rating meaning it is dust and water resistance (can survive up to 30 minute up to 2m deep).
On the right hand side of the device, there is the volume and power buttons which doesn’t quite work like you might think. For example, the power button doesn’t immediately presents you with options to power off your device.
Pressing it wakes up Google Assistance and you will have to hold it down for another 3 seconds without saying anything to the assistance to get power off and restart options.
At the back of the device resides one of the best camera set up on any smartphone in recent times. It uses combination of 4 sensors from Leica. Actually 3 camera and a time of flight (ToF) sensor which they use to make portrait pictures better.
The main, periscope and ultra wide sensor are arranged vertically at the top left rear corner of the device while the ToF sensor and LED flash are also arranged vertically some inch to their right side.
Starting with the Xiaomi Mi Mix, manufacturers have been trying all possible best to reduce or even totally rid smartphones of bezels at any part. Which is why there is notch display on the iPhones, tear drop display on the likes of
OnePlus 6T and pinch hole display as seen on the new Samsung Galaxy S10.
Huawei isn’t left out in this race as it use a tear/water drop display making it to compromise on earpiece speaker and selfie camera flash.
The device uses a 6.47-inches OLED screen with 1080 x 2340 pixels (Full HD+) resolution, 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 398 ppi pixel density. The color reproduction is very great. It is very bright and sharp even under direct sunlight. It is definitely not the best display out there but it is one of the best you can get.
P30 Pro front and back are made out of corning gorilla glass 5. The front glass extend to the extreme sides where it is connected to the back glass with aluminium frame as seen on most samsung galaxy phones from the past couple of years.
That’s not all, embedded under the screen are earpiece speaker and finger print sensor. It shows you where the reader is when you pick up the phone so you can unlock it while the screen is off. It is an Optical on-screen sensor as seen on the 6T which has been proven to be faster than the ultrasonic embedded under the S10.
Processor, Memory & Operating System
Huawei P30 Pro is powered by HiSilicon Kirin 980, a 7nm chip. It is an Octa Core (Dual 2.6 GHz Cortex-A76, Dual 1.92 GHz Cortex-A76 Quad 1.8 GHz Cortex-A55)) processor which is considered one of the fastest in the world. The P30 Pro itself is super fast and responsive. The processor is assisted by Mali-G76 MP10 GPU (Graphics Processing Unit).
On board the SoC is also 8GB RAM and internal storage in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB. You can expect the device to handle anything you throw at it without any hiccups or lag. You might not be needing an expandable storage but if you do, you should know it only supports Nano Memory which is not available everywhere like the traditional SD card.
It runs on Huawei custom firmware, the EMUI based on Android 9.0 Pie out of the box.
Battery, Camera & Connectivity
P30 Pro from Huawei is packed with 4200 mAh battery capacity which can last you more than a day of heavy usage and more than 2 days of light usage. It support fast charging up to 40W which can charge your device up to 70% in 30 minutes, fast wireless charging 15W and reverse charging at 2.5W. It has one of the best battery in any smartphone right now.
Camera wise, the device uses a Tri-camera and a ToF (time of flight sensor which allows the phone to take better portrait picture) 3D sensor.
The main sensor is a 40MP camera with f/1.6 aperture, PDAF and OIS.
There is an ultra wide 20MP f/2.2 aperture also with PDAF and 8MP Periscope/telephoto lens with f/3.4 aperture, PDAF, 5x optical zoom and up to 50x zoom, OIS (Optical Image Stabilization).
Its front facing camera on the other hand is 32MP with f/2.0 aperture.
The camera on the P30 Pro is currently considered the most versatile camera on any smartphone. It takes low light picture better than any smartphone right now. That doesn’t mean the natural light pictures are bad. To be precise, the only smartphone that currently takes better natural picture more than the P30 Pro is the Google Pixel 3 Xl.
Connectivity wise, it support NFC, dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type C, GPS and infrared.
